STEP 1: THINK ABOUT YOUR EVENT STYLE
There’s so many different types of invitations you can send, but your first step should be to think about what kind of “first impression” you want to create for your event.  Do you want to seem lavish and extravagent? Low key? Romantic? Modern and cutting edge? Relaxed? Vintage?
This really is an important step, because without deciding this you’ll find it much too difficult to choose your actual invitation design. Once you’ve got your event style then you’re ready to make decisions. The event style can then be carried across all the theming on the day – from the decorations to the gifts or favours to the table settings. You might even want to create a ‘mood board’ to help visualise what your event will look or feel like.

STEP 2: WILL YOU DIY OR HIRE AN EXPERT?
I’m willing to bet that it’s crossed the minds of almost everyone who organises a big event “should I just make my own invitations?”  The decision should really be lead by 2 things:
Budget – have a look at your wedding budget and decide whether you can afford to allocate money to creating beautiful invitations and event stationery. For some people on a very tight budget, it’s a no. But for most people it’s a yes or maybe, depending on how much it will cost.  Depending on the invitation company, the cost sometimes doesn’t end up that much cheaper once you include all the bits and pieces you need to buy in order to make your invitations.  To work out how brides usually allocate their budget and how much they spend on stationery, read our guide to allocating your wedding budget.

Do you have spare time – I’ve lost count of the number of people who’ve told me they made the invitations for their engagement party and were shocked at just how long it took. For many people it seems like a really good idea until they have to tie the 112th ribbon bow or glue on the 70th piece of lace perfectly straight. Before you decide to make your own invitations, think long and hard about whether you really have the time and patience to create the invitations of your dreams.  If you do: fantastic. Otherwise: talk to a specialist and see what it will cost.
At the end of the day, you need to make a trade-off on cost and time spent versus the impact your invitations will have.  Do you want your invitations to really stand out and make a statement?

STEP 3: CHOOSE AN INVITATION SUPPLIER
Assuming you’ve decided that you won’t be making your own invitations, then how do you choose someone to make them?
Cost will always be a factor, so have a look at the pricing on their website: is it visible and transparent or do they make you hunt for any cost details (or worse still, don’t mention cost at all)? That’s probably your first tip that they’re going to be expensive.  But if you love their work then ask for a quote – it doesn’t lock you in and you won’t die wondering.
Price aside, do you love their invitations? Can you see something in their invitation gallery that gets you excited and that you’d love to receive?  Design is very personal, so make sure you actually love the invitations you’ll be sending.  Do they feel unique, or are they like all the invitations you’ve received over the years?
Do they seem helpful?  There’s so many things you need to think about when you’re planning a big event, so you need suppliers who’ll lighten the load rather than big difficult to work with. If they’re willing to make suggestions and help you through the process then they’re probably someone you’d like to work with.
Of course, at this point I have to say that at we pride ourselves on all of these things at Sparkle Invitations!

STEP 4: INCORPORATE YOUR THEME
As your invitations are making the first impression for your event, they’re your chance to introduce your event theme. Your theme could be anything from certain colours, to flowers, to vintage or the event location.  For example, if you are having a garden wedding, incorporate flowers into your wedding invitations. If it’s a golden wedding anniversary you’re planning, then perhaps you want to include the colour gold.
Your theme could even just be a ‘feel’ – such as “decadent and opulent”.  Whatever it is, look for little design accents that will help introduce this to your guests.

STEP 5: CHOOSE THE COLOUR
You may already have a colour theme for your event, but if not, now is the time to choose one so you can use it in your invitations.  For a wedding, it could be the colour of your bridesmaids dresses. Or bridal white or cream.  For a boy’s Christening or Bar Mitzvah, it might be royal blue.  If you haven’t decided on a specific colour, the classic, timeless combinations of cream and gold or  silver and white always look stunning.

There are many ways you can include your event colour in the invitations. You could select the colour of the paper, the writing, ribbons or other decorations on the invitations. Talk to your invitation supplier and ask them to make suggestions for you.

STEP 6: DECIDE ON YOUR ACCESSORIES.
Once you decide on your invitations, it will be easy to co-ordinate the rest of your event stationery, or “Accessories” as we call them here at Sparkle Invitations. What are Accessories?  They’re all the finishing touches that will make your event feel well put together.  For most events, an RSVP card and thank you card are the minimum.  For a wedding these could include the order of service, place cards, menu table cards and bonbonniere.

It can seem overwhelming, but take your time and work through these steps and you’ll find choosing your invitations can be lots of fun. If you’ve got any questions or need some help, just get in touch at service@sparkleinvitations.com.au
