My advice to anyone using these kind of registries would be to thoroughly check the charges and terms (ie the small print) before signing up, and before sending the web address to all your family and friends.

We didn't follow this advice with ourwishingwell.com and it's ended up being quite expensive. The charges are quite hidden away and the site goes to some lengths to explain how (almost) everything is "free".

For gifts under 100 pounds (UK) the "guest" pays a 5% charge, and for withdrawals under 5000 pounds the "host" pays 5%. The charges are slightly lower for higher values payments, but all our transactions were within the above categories, so we ended up paying almost 10% (9.75% for the mathemeticians) on our wedding gifts.

This was because we opted to pay the guest charges as well (imagine your friend having to pay a charge to give you a gift!!!).

Either way, 10% of the money goes to the site, and 10% is a lot, considering that you can do bank transactions online for free. Frankly, ourwishingwell.com are laughing all the way to the bank. A shop would never charge you like that to use their wedding list service.

So feel free to use these kind of registry sites if you wish to, but please make sure you are aware of the charges. Once the web address has been sent out with the invitation it's difficult to change your mind.
