Choosing your flowers can seem like a daunting task. Below are a few handy hints to help you with your planning. It is best to breakdown the elements into 3 main groups
- STYLE: Think about how you want to hold/ carry your bouquet e.g. laid in your arm, trailing, or upright and also the overall look of your flowers e.g. open or tightly clustered. Certain flowers look best trailing such as Singapore orchids while other can only be used in a wired style such as stephanotis. Look at different pictures and see how the flowers are being held and what style you think will suit your dress and theme. A good floral designer will give you an honest opinion on the size and style required to best suit your body shape and dress designs.
- FLOWERS: what flowers do you love? Most flowers are available in many colours so you can select from many different blooms. Consider using seasonal blooms as the quality is better and they can be more affordable. Also take into consideration Australia’s unpredictable climate and select flowers that can withstand different temperatures and conditions. Mother Nature can be difficult so it’s a good idea to have a few back up ideas. Most flowers are available year round.
- COLOUR: Colour is probably the most important feature of your flowers. Colour can accent and highlight your gowns and accessories and bring all the different elements of your day together. There is no wrong or right with colour selection but your floral designer will be able to offer you the most complimentary suggestions based on your own colouring and the colouring of the dresses. Brides no longer need to carry the traditional white. Often the bride chooses a stronger colour for her flowers to compliment the bridesmaid’s dresses to help balance the bridal party visually.
- Wait until you have all your fabrics chosen as this will help your designer give you colour suggestions. Take samples of the fabrics and any pictures of the dress designs. (if possible)
- Collect pictures of bouquets and decoration you like or make notes from the “Flowers by Kate” website photo gallery .
- Make a list of what you need. (also find out what is included in your church and reception packages)
- Do you or does anyone in your bridal party have any allergies?
- Ask for advice. Your floral designer might have some different ideas for you to consider.
- Have fun!
