So you've been flicking through countless bridal magazines, admiring the gorgeous gowns on offer from expensive retailers and it left you wondering...how can I look amazing on my wedding day without paying a small fortune?

Allow me to assist. After 10 years in the wedding planning game, I have met some very clever and inventive brides. Any bride on a budget needs to think outside the square and lets face it, $2000 for a dress that you'll only wear for about 8 hours is probably not the best investment you'll ever make.

So what are your options? Firstly, you could hire a dress. This can be a cheaper option however it is not as budget friendly as you might think. In general, you can hire a dress for about half the retail price. So if the gown retails for $1800, you're still paying $900 for something you have to give back and that can be altered slightly but not made to fit as well as a purchased gown which you can play around with as much as you like.

There's also the possibility of borrowing a gown from a relative or friend. This is very cost effective but it's important to check where you stand in terms of making alterations to the dress.

A number of brides with whom I have recently dealt with have cleaverly shopped for a "formal" or "debutante" dress. The trend in these gowns is currently all about embellishments and detailing so generally speaking they are not a lot different to a "wedding" gown but are much cheaper. Many don't have trains but for those with their hearts set on the traditional look, a chapel or cathedral length veil will achieve the same effect.

Many brides are buying designer gowns and selling them at a fraction of the cost immediately after the wedding. If there's something in particular you like, try searching online pre-loved wedding gown sites. Many of the dresses listed are current or recent season's designs so you might just hit the jackpot!

If you aren't too sentimentally attached to your gown, why not resell it once you're finished with it and recoup some of the cost?

Finally, remember that no one is going to know if your dress is custom made, borrowed, pre-loved or bought at the local op-shop. Just make sure that whatever you choose, it suits you and your personality. After all, it's you he's marrying, not the dress!
