Over the past ten years, civil marriage ceremonies have become popular alternatives to the more traditional, religious wedding. Today, more than 60% of all marriages within Australia take place outside of the church.
Marriage Celebrants are appointed by the Attorney General in accordance with the Marriage Act 1961. A list of all authorised Celebrants can be found at http://www.ag.gov.au/celebrants.
Life is all about choices and Marriage Celebrants are encouraged to offer a range of ceremony options, to assist the couple in writing their own vows and personalise their ceremony. Your chosen words should reflect your style, personalities and vision for your special day.
It is important that you feel comfortable with your Celebrant and confident that they suit your needs and will complement your special day. Most Celebrants are more than happy to have a chat over the phone or to meet with you to discuss your ceremony requirements before making a booking.
The services provided by each Celebrant may vary. Some may offer a variety of packages; others may include a rehearsal, PA System or a table to assist with signing your Certificates.
Fees for weddings are not fixed and will vary from Celebrant to Celebrant, as will their inclusions. Ensure that you reach an agreement on fees and inclusions and that you understand if there are any non-refundable booking fees or additional charges, before asking the Celebrant to hold your date.
To fulfill legal obligations, you must give a completed Notice of Intended Marriage form to an Authorised Marriage Celebrant within 18 months of your proposed marriage and no later than one month and one day prior. All Marriage Celebrants should have all the necessary paperwork to perform your ceremony and register your marriage.
Before your marriage can take place, your Celebrant will also need to sight your birth certificates (original or extract) and evidence that any prior marriage has been dissolved.
It is advisable that you confirm your wedding arrangements with your Celebrant in writing, plenty of time before the day.
As with any marriage ceremony, you will need two witnesses present, both over the age of 18, to sign your legal documents.
Your Celebrant plays an important role both on your wedding day and also leading up to it. Choosing the right Celebrant for you will ensure that your ceremony is personal and stress free - one that you will always cherish!
